The Oomiak Crew Spotlight series is back and in this edition, we’re taking a look within our Business Development (BD) team.
Our team is filled to the brim with enthusiastic, experienced, and skilled people – we’re excited to share their stories.
My Role in Oomiak
Prior to Oomiak, Mark worked for several leading refrigeration and consulting firms in a number of roles including project manager, designer and business development.
Launching Oomiak back in 2006 with Cate McGuire, Oomiak has grown from a “great idea” to now being a leader in industrial refrigeration. As one of the owners of Oomiak, Mark has been a critical member of our business from day 1.
Mark’s holistic knowledge of the industrial refrigeration industry is a key contributor to his success and ability to drive progress and growth within Oomiak.
“We’ve grown from three people working in a two-person office to a national company and further to that a structured and successful organisation.
Something that I’ve noticed that’s stayed with me are all the pieces that come together in this business. We employ an outstanding group of people from diverse backgrounds and skills set who work together to ensure that our services are all delivered in line with our clients’ expectations.
And it’s been really interesting over the years to realise and learn how each role contributes to the success of an organisation, and more importantly how each Oomiak teammate contributes to our success,” says Mark.
Like the business, Mark’s role within the company has also seen some development as Oomiak continued to evolve.
“In my time at Oomiak, I’ve always been involved in Business Development. Initially though I had more involvement with project delivery as opposed to now where my main priority is to conceptualise and design successful solutions for our clients”
Across this 16+ year journey with Oomiak and the countless clients Mark has served, there are two that continue to stand out as milestone projects – these are:
Melbourne Market Authority’s Central Refrigeration Plant Project
“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we capitalised on – we could really showcase our ability and technical knowledge in a complex and never before done application for the Melbourne Market site,” says Mark.
Read more about the project here.
Arnott’s Biscuits R22 System Replacement Project
This was a great milestone project for the team as it showcased our creative thinking and efficiency with some key takeaways being:
- The project was delivered a year ahead of schedule
- We completed the works with zero disruption to Arnott’s business operations
- The results exceeded all expectations as we developed a non-mainstream solution that worked better
Best Thing About Working at Oomiak
“I get the opportunity to get to know our customers’ business, identify their needs and then work to develop solutions that provide value.
Taking the time to build this relationship and trust with a customer is very important as this allows you to truly understand what their needs are,” says Mark.
My Career Tips
As part of Oomiak’s leadership team there are triumphs and challenges that Mark is responsible and accountable for. Navigating through these is a big factor to Mark and Oomiak’s success so, to tackle these Mark exercises three mindsets:
- Stay focused on the task
- Always keep an open mind
- Be true to yourself
“It’s our job to be experts and it’s important that we learn and support our clients through changing regulations and new technical opportunities,” says Mark.
When Mark and Cate McGuire launched Oomiak back in 2006, they knew that customers were looking for a service provider that could quickly gain an understanding of their businesses and offer solutions that meet not only immediate but also future needs.
Fast forward to today and this idea has come to fruition, great work Mark for helping lay this foundation and for all the hard work along the way!
