The Oomiak Crew Spotlight series is back and in this edition, we’re looking within our Capital Projects team!
Our team is filled to the brim with enthusiastic, experienced, and skilled people – we’re excited to share their stories.
My Role in Oomiak
Passionate about his profession and clients, Joshua Johnston brings an enthusiastic and energetic approach to his work.
Starting with Oomiak back in 2020, Joshua’s role has developed and grown much like Joshua himself.
“I started my Oomiak journey in 2020 and since then I’ve held a few different titles. Initially, starting as an Engineer, I progressed to Project Engineer which led me to my current role as Project Manager,” says Joshua.
Embracing the challenge with a willingness to succeed, Joshua approached this opportunity with a can-do attitude.
“It’s been really good trying my hand at different roles, getting a feel for different aspects of the business, and developing my skillset more broadly,” says Joshua.
Client-focused, a typical workday for Joshua is centred around finding solutions and ensuring smooth sailing for the projects he’s involved in.
“Typically, each day for me can look different but some constants are problem-solving and finding solutions for our clients,” says Joshua.
Some responsibilities Joshua holds are:
- Optimising methods and installations for a smoother and more efficient way of doing things
- Supporting his teams and monitoring their progress
- Liaising with clients and working through any questions, expectations, or changes that arise
- Handling duties either on-site or in our Adelaide office
Working on some influential projects already, Joshua has worked with clients like Thomas Foods International, V&V Walsh, and Foodfx.
“Something else that I’m involved with is an initiative that’s helping evolve Oomiak’s operations.
The Design Standards initiative is a group consisting of me and my colleagues who meet regularly to improve Oomiak’s methodologies,” says Joshua.
An embodiment of our SPICES Joshua and this group help propel Oomiak forward by establishing:
- A better way of operating
- More efficient, streamlined and accurate solutions
- An overall better product for the client
“So, the work we’re putting in here isn’t just to benefit us, it’s also to benefit the client which is a massive box we always aim to tick.
Some of the benefits we hope to transfer from this are a cheaper product that gives great quality, greater energy efficiency and shorter time on-site for the Oomiak team,” says Joshua.
Best Thing About Working at Oomiak
“For me, it’s the varying industries Oomiak provides work for, our clients are across such a broad range of industries and it’s great to see such diversity,” says Joshua.
Not afraid to get his hands dirty, Joshua likes the practical work that he gets to carry out and the learnings this brings.
“Working in Project Management has been a great hands-on experience. I am continually pushed out of my comfort zone, tackling new responsibilities, and always learning – while this might not always be a fun task it’s extremely rewarding,” says Joshua.
My Career Tips
“Learning how to properly prioritise tasks not only for myself but for my team has been an extremely helpful learning curve,” says Joshua.
Pairing this with total commitment to his profession and Oomiak’s client base, Joshua continues to be an instrumental teammate.
“For me, going that extra mile for a client or any relevant stakeholder isn’t a burden – I’m passionate about the work I do and that allows me to chase a high standard almost naturally,” says Joshua.
Communication also plays a big role in the execution of this high standard.
“Being able to communicate both with internal Oomiak teammates, external stakeholders and clients is something that helps me daily whether it’s to build relationships or execute a particular task.
Building and maintaining these relationships are massively important because the people you talk to help you complete the work and find solutions.
And by having a relationship with someone it helps you understand what they want, even if they don’t necessarily know themselves,” says Joshua.
Joshua’s energy, grit, and willingness to go above and beyond is infectious. We’re all excited to see what he achieves next!
