The Oomiak Crew Spotlight series is back and in this edition, we’re travelling to WA!
Our team is filled to the brim with enthusiastic, experienced, and skilled people – we’re excited to share their stories.
My Role in Oomiak
Working within our Customer Support team in WA, Alan DeGraaf has an extensive career and brings with him a wealth of knowledge. A veteran in the industry, Alan’s journey first began in the Netherlands, and he would follow a path that saw him develop in a few key trades.
“I first started out as an electrician in the (Dutch) navy and then progressed to a maintenance mechanic at a pharmaceutical factory. Then I became a welder before finding the industrial refrigeration industry. I guess you could say I started refrigeration a bit late!” said Alan.
Best Thing About Working at Oomiak
“I think realising that management plays such an important role. At Oomiak we’re an honest and social bunch and that’s very important – it makes work less stressful.”
Alan’s day is client focused and centred around organising and creating situations where the client’s unique needs and requirements are met – a typical day for Alan includes:
- Going to site and meeting with the client
- Debriefing with apprentices and making sure their duties and responsibilities are clear
- Doing safety checks regardless of the task being undertaken
- Organising and completing the necessary works
“My client relationships are amicable and that’s important for me. Not only is it good business and people skills, but it makes going that extra step genuine and much more enjoyable.”
My Career Tips
Being adaptable and continual learning and growing his skillset is a sure-fire way that sees Alan excel.
“In this occupation, you’ll always keep learning as technology keeps evolving – adaptability is the fun part! You have to be creative in finding solutions because most of the time the answer won’t always be simple or convenient.”
“What I like most about the industry is the fact that it has so many aspects of different trades all rolled into one. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing you name it, we do it all,” says Alan.
Alan has positively influenced a few of our big-name projects, having his hand across works for Aldi, V&V Walsh, Hilton Foods, Austal Shipping, and more.
Committed to our values, team mates and clients, Alan is a key component of our WA team – great stuff Alan, keep up the amazing work!
