Establishing a new winery in Penna, Tasmania, the Hill-Smith Family engaged Oomiak to facilitate a tailored refrigeration solution.
From its origins back in 1849, the Hill-Smith Family has been making wine at Yalumba with passion, experience, and innovation. Helping facilitate this great work, Oomiak learned their system required heating and cooling for the winery process loads and temperature-controlled storage areas. To achieve this, the site needed a dedicated refrigeration plant which included a brine reticulation circuit and a heating hot water reticulation circuit.
The Oomiak team developed the following systems to facilitate the winery’s needs. These included:
Brine Circuit System – The circuit was sized for process cooling for winery tanks and temperature control of the Barrel Store and Fruit Room, the circuit contains two 15kL hot and cold buffer tanks and is cooled by an air-cooled chiller package located outside the plantroom. The heating hot water circuit is connected to the heat reclaim circuit of the chiller package, increasing plant heating efficiency.
Heating Hot Water Circuit System – The circuit was sized for Barrel Storeroom heating, Fruit Room air cooler warm glycol defrost, process heating of juice heating machinery and process heating of the winery tanks. The circuit contains a 10kL buffer tank and is heated by an indoor LPG condensing boiler inside the plantroom.
Barrel Store and Fruit Room Air Coolers – Under ceiling air coolers were sized to meet the different specified load requirements for each room. The fruit room operates as a chiller at 3⁰C and contains an interlaced coil for defrost. The barrel store operates at 12⁰C and contains a separate hot water coil for heating.
Brine temperature to the air coolers for cooling is controlled by a temper loop pump circuit, with one for each room located in the roof space. The air coolers are individually controlled for room temperature with EC fans.
